A few weeks back I wrote a post on my favorite historical romance novels and it shocked us all by doing really, really well. I mean, I know that I’m obsessed with historical romance but I had no idea y’all would be so interested as well. And then I thought, well shoot, if they want my favorite genres I could write all day long about what to read next. This time around I thought I’d share my favorite paranormal books. Call me a twelve year old but I love vampires and wizards and fairies (oh my!) and if you like them too check out the list below.
1. A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness – I know what you’re thinking… Rachel, we get it, you’re obsessed with this book, please stop including it in every round up! I can’t help it guys. I can’t make a list of the best paranormal books and not include this epic story about a vampire and a witch falling in love. I’ve read it so many times it’s mortifying to admit the number and if I ever meet Harkness in real life I will absolutely embarrass us both when I start crying.
2. Court of Thorn and Roses by Sarah J. Maas – This has been my favorite read of the summer… even if it is technically YA. It’s Hunger Games meets Beauty and the Beast but with fairies. Yes please!!
3. Written in Red by Anne Bishop – Ok, this one is odd. It’s like he’s an alien shape shifter and she’s a prophet who’s been held prisoner all her life. It’s kind of crazy but I LOVED the world building in this book. It’s so creative. My only gripe is that we’re four books into the series and the main couple hasn’t even held hands yet… but I’m addicted and can’t stop reading so that stands for something.
4. Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs – Speaking of best paranormal, this is such an awesomely weird book and something you can read with your middle schooler. The author collected real, old vintage photos that were spooky or weird and made up a story to go along with them. It’s a little creepy but I loved this inventive storytelling.
5. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – This is the story of two magicians raised to be in competition with each other who end up falling in love even as they battle to be the best. But it’s magical and mystical and has a really fantastical ending so I’m going to go ahead and call it paranormal.
6. The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning – I would be remiss not to include it here because I devoured these books like my life depended on it. The heroine flies to Ireland to find out who killed her sister but once she gets there she discovers that evil fairies are slowly taking over the world. She teams up with a jerky (but gorgeous, obviously) anti-hero to fight them off. They won’t get together until book five and when they do… holy mackerel! Book five is not appropriate for younger readers… and even some older readers, just, prepare yourself for that.
7. The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley – I can’t actually believe this is paranormal, because it feels like historical to me (all of SK’s books do) but since it’s about a psychics who can see the past I suppose that counts. All I know is, the love stories are wonderful and because it’s a Kearsley you get two for the price of one!
