Sausage Gravy on Toast

sausage gravy on toast

In this week’s #RachelRecipe I’m sharing one of my favorite dinners growing up… Sausage Gravy on Toast. Yes, I recognize that this seems more like brunch food but when we were little this was something we had often for dinner and I LOVED it. Watch the video below where I explain why it’s such a special meal memory for me and then continue on to see the full recipe!

It’s time to prep your toast!

broil toast

You could simply toast your bread but since we’re already having a calorie-fest I say you just embrace it! Butter your bread and broil it for a few minutes until crispy. Now top with gravy (and a little more butter if you’re inclined!) and enjoy.

Sausage Gravy on Texas Toast

A comfort food classic for Rachel Hollis, this sausage gravy is made with crowned country sausage and a thicken milk gravy. Served over thick slices of buttered Texas toast. It’s the ultimate comfort food!
Prep time 10 minutes
Cook time 20 minutes
Total time 30 minutes
Servings 6

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound country sausage
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 slices Texas toast
  • 4 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the oil and heat through, throw in the sausage and begin to crumble as it cooks with a wooden spoon. Sauté until brown and crispy. Add the onions and garlic and stir to combine. Cook until they’ve softened. Add the flour and cook for a few minutes. Slowly stream in the whole milk, while you whisk continuously. Lower the flame and cook until the milk has bubbled and thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Liberally butter the toast and place under the broiler until golden brown. Spoon the sausage gravy over each slice of toast and top with a bit more butter. Enjoy!
