I think I get a DM on Instagram once every two minutes asking me what’s in my green smoothie. So, I decided it was about time to create a blog post all about my infamous green smoothie. First up, let me explain why I drink a smoothie every morning. When I first got into it years ago it was because I wasn’t eating breakfast or the breakfast I was having was terrible for me. I started drinking a green smoothie as a way to kick start my metabolism each morning and keep me full (and my blood sugar level) for several hours afterward. For the last year I’ve been making myself breakfast (eggs and fresh fruit / veggies) but in quarantine –as I’m sure you know– it’s tough to get the usual groceries. I’m back on the smoothie because every ingredient in it lasts forever. OK, not really forever but most of it is pantry staples so you don’t have to worry about stocking up on supplies. I freeze my spinach (so it doesn’t go bad) and while I always drink my almond milk in plenty of time, even that could be frozen into ice cubes so it would last longer. So now I get to have a healthy breakfast full of good nutrients and it doesn’t have to be restocked often!

This is the smoothie I make every single day. Seven days a week. No matter what. I got the recipe for this smoothie from my friend, Kelly Leveque who wrote the book Body Love.

GREEN SMOOTHIE

1 serving unflavored protein powder – I prefer Vital Proteins Collagen Powder

1 tablespoon of almond butter – I buy the kind that’s literally just almonds

1 table spoons of flaxseed or chia seeds (Dave is allergic to chia, so we don’t keep it in the house)

Handful of spinach – I keep mine in the freezer so it lasts forever and also makes the smoothie cold

1 cups unsweetened nut milk – I do almond milk but coconut works great too

I blend everything up in my Nutri Bullet. I used to use a fancy blender but it was too much work to clean. now I just blend it in this cup and drink it out of this cup. I thought about pouring it into a cute mason jar or something for the pic but that isn’t my real life. Many of my dinners are on cool platters and plates I’ve collected over time but my smoothie is literally just fuel so I want to make it as easy as possible to create it and clean up after myself.

I’ve used this recipe as my base and have made modifications as I went. I don’t love the taste by any means but I drink it every morning because it fuels my body. It allows me to have energy and sets my day up for success. Whether you adopt this smoothie or create your own recipe I encourage you to find a breakfast that you can habitually make. Remember, if you own the morning you own the day!
