A crate bookshelf is an instant way to add personality and a rustic flare to any room. I first got the idea when I thought – I want to build myself a bookshelf. With this said, I definitely don’t have the skill, tools or patience to truly “build” myself a bookshelf, so I turned to the next best thing — Crates!

When I first set out, I wasn’t sure whether I would go for the vintage variety, but after looking at them, I was sold. They have so much personality and I love having some history in my otherwise retail-clad apartment.

If you’re located in LA, I definitely recommend getting some of these amazing vintage crates through Davis Crates & Co, located in Venice. If you’re looking for some crates, but can’t get out to Venice, here’s some brand spankin’ new ones.

Clean up

The thing about vintage crates that caught me off guard is they’re DIRTY! I spent nearly an hour light sanding and wiping down the crates. Wipe down with a dry rag and definitely don’t sand too much. I didn’t want to strip away the dark rustic look, but I was set on dislodging as much unnecessary dirt as possible!

I made sure to place the most interesting looking crates where the details can be seen. I just love this orange one.
