Queens Gate[3]

Queen’s Gate

I just got back from London, my absolute favorite city in the world. This time was for work (the premiere of “World War Z”), but I managed to sneak in a few extra days of fun (don’t tell!). In fact, if I didn’t have a husband, two cats and a company to run, I don’t think I would have ever come back! But since my home is Los Angeles, I put together some London inspired decor that will serve as a constant reminder of my time spent in Old Blighty.

Black and white always screams London to me. The gorgeous flats in the posh neighborhoods of Kensington, Notting Hill and Knightsbridge are all white with big glossy black doors. The taxis are black (why can’t our taxis be so adorable). The windows at Harrods right now are decked out in black and white for “The Great Gatsby.” ESPA Life, the spa at my hotel, the Corinthia was black and white. It’s also huge in fashion right now, as seen from the red carpet in Cannes and even at “World War Z” in London. I use black and white a lot in my own home. It forms a neutral palette that is easy to change up inexpensively adding pops of color with pillows or a new throw. Black and white is classy, sophisticated and classic, yet can add a little edge and excitement. Exactly like London.

London Inspired

1. Kate: The Kate Moss Book – Kate Moss is an icon, especially in England. This book graced the coffee table at the Corinthia Hotel and she became a topic of conversation. And then I saw it again at my favorite department store in London…Harvey Nichols.

2. Metropolitan Line Luggage Racks – The Tube is so classic London and the best way to get around the city. These are original 1960s luggage racks from the the Metropolitan line rescued by the London Transport Museum. Use them as shelves anywhere in your house. They come in raw or any of the 12 colors of the London Underground. Please mind the gap!

3. Live Boxwood Topiary – You can’t go one block in London without seeing a topiary. They grace the entrance of every home, shop…even pub! I love that this particular one is living, but there are also many artificial ones that look real. I’d love to get this as a gift in lieu of cut flowers…chic and original!

4. Scottie Dog Table Jug – I was blessed with spectacular weather while I was there, so everyone had their doggies out for a walk. Animals are very trendy in decor right now and I just love all the handmade pottery by Fennella Smith in England.

5. Steel-Arm Bend Chair in Persimmon – David Bowie at the Victoria & Albert Museum is the hottest exhibit in London at the moment. It runs through August 11th, but make sure to get tickets in advance . I was so excited to arrive at 3pm with only a 5 minute wait, but as soon as it was my turn to go up to the counter, I was slapped with a “Sold Out” sign (enter expletive here!). This bright chair was inspired by David Bowie and all his crazy colorful costumes.

6. Chrome Tulip Table Lamp – The black and chrome reminds me of ESPA Life, which is ridiculously amazing. If you ever get the chance to go, it is worth a splurge! This lamp will add a little drama and glamour to any room.

7. Wedgwood Cuckoo Teacup and Saucer – My hotel had a mini Harrods boutique chocoblock with colorful Wedgewood teacups. Of course I couldn’t resist bringing one home…I think it will be the first of a collection from my travels (much better than a shot glass, don’t you think?)

8. Union Jack and Queen Head Pillows – Ok, these are a splurge, but are the coolest pillows EVER! I’m saving up for at least one! There are many Union Jack pillows out there, but these are unlike any I’ve seen (check out the other colors). They are also handmade on Etsy–a big plus in my book.
